With the first solo exhibition of the late artist J. Hans Hannemann (1928–2023), who passed away in 2023, FS.ART is dedicating itself to a largely overlooked yet artistically remarkable body of work that was created here in the Lake Constance region. J. Hans Hannemann lived and worked in Konstanz-Litzelstetten.
The exhibition presents a comprehensive retrospective, featuring works from all creative periods – from the early 1960s to his late work.
Hannemann’s painting is rooted in Concrete Art. Through precisely composed images, he consistently developed a non-representational visual language. His work is characterized by clear geometries, a finely tuned color palette, and the dynamic interplay of surface and line. His oeuvre shows affinities with international movements such as Minimal Art, Hard Edge, and, particularly in his early work, with the Zero group. In his later years, Hannemann began to dissolve the strict geometry of his compositions, turning instead to a vibrant form of all-over painting.
Although Hannemann primarily worked in southern Germany and his works were rarely shown beyond the region, his oeuvre demonstrates a compelling artistic quality that easily stands up to international comparison. In recent years, his work has gained renewed attention through exhibitions and is currently undergoing a well-deserved reappraisal. FS.ART represents the artist’s estate exclusively.
The exhibition in Tettnang brings three central groups of Hannemann’s work into dialogue and invites viewers to rediscover an artist whose visual precision and conceptual clarity remain strikingly relevant today.
